Following on from our work on factors and multiples, Year 5 used concrete manipulatives to support our understanding of square and cubed numbers. We made square shaped arrays using different amounts of cubes – 1, 4, 9, 16 etc, realising that we couldn’t make a square with other amounts – then attempted to represent cube numbers by making the arrays 3D. It took so many cubes to make larger cube numbers, that we almost ran out of cubes by end!
